Orchid Care Tips

CATTLEYA

 LIGHT
One of the important requirements to grow and bloom your Cattleya. Bright light, early morning direct sun is optimal from our growing experience but don't leave it direct in the sun too long. Direct sun should be avoided in the middle of the day.

AIR FLOW
Another crucial piece of information we'd like to include is air flow. We have noticed that this information isn't really touched upon, but If you can get a good air flow in the room for your plant it will help mimic what happens naturally in the wild. This helps especially with any kind of fungal growth that may happen on the growing agent/media as well as extra water that remains on the leaves of the plant's leaves will evaporate faster.

TEMPERATURE
From 15-18°C night temperatures to 21-29°C during the day. A 10-15°C day/night temperature difference is recommended.

WATER
Depending on your type of media or growing agent you'll be using will depend on how often watering should be done. Usually rule of thumb when the media or growing agent is slightly dry is when you can water again, or when in doubt wait a day or two then water. Making sure the plant doesn't stand in water, check to see if pot has stopped dripping at the bottom. Humidity is also a good part of how the plant gets water. We usually keep the humidity in the growing area at or around 50-60%, with good air circulation.

FERTILIZING
Fertilizing your plants during active growth with a balanced 20-20-20 (NPK - Nitrogen/Phosphorus/Potassium) fertilizer of your choice. If you're using bark for your plant a higher nitrogen count like 30-10-10 is recommended at least once every two weeks (recommendation is using ¼ dose of suggested amount). When the plant is not in active growth, usually during winter months, fertilizing once a month will do. Flushing your pots once a month with just water will also help get rid of some salt build up in the pot.

DENDROBIUM

LIGHT
Ample light is crucial for healthy growth and flower production. South facing windows are best and optimal, but East & West facing will also be ideal locations to place your plants. Making sure that direct sun isn’t on your plant during the hottest part of the day.

TEMPERATURE
For most Dendrobium species they can tolerate hot weather given good ventilation & humidity. A general temperature range for most Dendrobiums during the day would be 18°C to 25°C, and at night can tolerate 13°C to 16°C. Also a good rule we suggest is to research your plant, some Dendrobiums grow in cooler conditions.

Usually rule of thumb when the media or growing agent is slightly dry is when you can water again, or when in doubt wait a day or two then water. Making sure the plant doesn't stand in water, check to see if pot has stopped dripping at the bottom when doing a complete watering through the pot. Humidity is also a good part of how the plant gets water. We usually keep the humidity in the growing area at or around 50-60%, with good air circulation.
